Hello readers, this post will be longer one, but I'll try cover all what goes in my mind last 3 months, when I spending time with Chappie. Lets begin with the real start that is dated to somewhere about 2011. Yep, it's almost 8 year from start of basic idea. These day I was limited with almost everything.
Then I moved to software part, in these days I don't have many experience with programing robots or any other kind of electronics. Im software developer, now when i'm writing this article for almost 15 year. But at early 2011 it was 6th year of software developing and I don't have any clue howto work with hardware. So I decide to start with some basic AI with facial recognition.

And because making connections and doin cooperations is the healthy way to grow up. I met one guy, named TeaPack who was willing to teach me how to draw in Fusion 360 properly. So many thanks for him and his time investment in my personal growth. I'll always be grateful for this, because it oppened so many new ways to create things.

Everything start when I was playing Portal 2 game and I was amazed by Wheatley. Talking robot with fascinating level of facial expressions. What was created by few simple principles.I need to make him alive in my house, that was the first what came in my mind. But how I can create the model and make him alive? 3d printing was in really starting point, printer are expensive, and I don't have any friend who have it. This problem can be solved by few companies started 3d printing on demand, but there is still problem with the mode. I can't find any model on internet, what can make me happy with level of details and game accurate feel and movements.Then I moved to software part, in these days I don't have many experience with programing robots or any other kind of electronics. Damn, It's hard…
Writing some basic AI was pretty simple, but facial recognition from real time video, that was different kind of story. I done some research and OpenCV was nice, but i want more. I found some professional libraries but they are too expensive for home made project. And there was the issue with the model. I have big background in vector graphics and few years of 3d, but designing functional model is totally different process.Sometimes best thing to do is just wait.
As time goes, I was introduced how to program Adruino, How servo motor works. Get some basic in electricity and stuff. Build my own FPV Drone, made 3d printed spitfire, design few things in Fusion 360. And I start remembering on this project. In fact I have all prerequisites to make this happen. In meantime I do daily vlogs for 635 days, and enjoy video shooting and editing. But I always want to write blog, so finally i'm writing one!And because making connections and doin cooperations is the healthy way to grow up. Who is Chappie and why him?
Chappie is robot from the movie with same name. Link here: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1823672/ The movie is kinda meh but First time I saw this robot I love how little mechanical parts can be used to express so much emotions. And few months ago I remember on my Wheatley project. And its was set, let's make something I can't make before, because now, I can!
What is the Goal?
It's pretty simple and similar like before.- Design whole head of Chappie in Fusion 360 in 1:1 scale
- Make the design movie accurate as I can
- 3d Print most of the parts
- Motorize all part what has been moving in movie in exact same way like in the move
- Make every part of the model looks exactly same like in the movie, led lights, display etc.
- Make him alive with facial recognition, motion tracking and some basic “AI”

It's not longest list of todo in history, but I want to do it propper way, it will take so much time and research. Thanks to 4k format of movies, I have almost infinite number of reference images.
